Sacred Heart School in Wadhurst is looking for a cheerful and committed Caretaker to help maintain a safe, clean and well-functioning environment for staff, pupils and visitors.

What You’ll Be Doing

Security & Safety

• Unlock the school each morning and carry out site security and H&S checks
• Lock and secure the school after hours, weekends or lettings as needed
• Provide access to contractors and supervise site safety during visits
• Ensure clear and safe fire escape routes, and conduct monthly fire alarm testing

General Maintenance

• Carry out daily site tasks: empty recycling bins, move food waste, bring in milk deliveries, put down chairs
• Undertake minor repairs, maintenance and upkeep of school buildings and fixtures
• Check roofs, gutters, soffits, and ensure safe, debris-free grounds
• Regularly disinfect drains and dustbins
• Monitor and address damage, hazards or health and safety concerns

Groundskeeping

• Maintain tidy and clean external areas
• Clear moss, weeds, and snow or ice to ensure safe access for pupils and staff
• Assist with seasonal tasks and small landscaping duties as requested

Porterage & Support

• Move furniture and supplies as needed
• Support staff with simple classroom set-up tasks
• Receive deliveries and distribute goods to appropriate areas
• Prepare the school hall for functions or events

Facilities Management

• Monitor heating systems, boilers and energy usage (record meter readings)
• Report and manage building maintenance issues via the school office
• Meet regularly with the Headteacher/Bursar regarding H&S and site issues
• Ensure boiler room is tidy and hazard-free
• Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes (up to 11ft using PPE)

✅ Who We’re Looking For

You are:

• Friendly, reliable and willing to support the Catholic ethos of the school
• Detail-oriented and able to follow H&S regulations and procedures
• Confident in basic repair and maintenance tasks
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a small team
• Great with people – especially young children and school staff
• Physically able to carry out manual work and operate basic tools

You bring:

• 1+ year of experience in site maintenance (preferred but not essential)
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• Ability to maintain records and conduct safety checks
• A flexible attitude and willingness to undergo relevant training
• Work authorisation in the UK (required)

Working Hours & Flexibility

We are open to hiring either:

• Full-Time (hours discussed at interview)
  OR
• Part-Time: Monday–Friday, 7am–9am and 3pm–5pm

📅 INSET Days: Start at 8:00am
🏖️ School Holidays: Up to 20 hours/week – flexible or collated hours depending on site needs
