  • Salary: £48,414 – £51,377 (Depending on Experience)
  • Work Model: Hybrid (50% office-based / 50% remote)

About the Role at UKCEH

As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you’ll play a key role within the Digital Engineering team at UKCEH. Specifically, you will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of hybrid cloud solutions. These systems power major environmental data initiatives such as EIDC, FDRI, and NC-UK.

Your mission will be to architect and implement scalable, secure, and cloud-native systems. Crucially, you will ensure seamless integration across diverse datasets and digital platforms. You’ll collaborate closely with scientists, developers, and data experts to deliver cutting-edge research infrastructure that supports real-world environmental solutions.

This role offers the chance to work on exciting challenges like building research cloud infrastructure, developing data lake solutions, implementing digital twins, and fostering collaboration across national and international research communities.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

  • Leadership & Design: Lead the architecture, design, and development of scalable, secure cloud-based systems.
  • Collaboration: Work with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust digital research infrastructure.
  • Methodology: Champion cloud-native practices and Agile methodologies across the team.
  • Funding Support: Support project proposals and funding bids, ensuring deliverables align with strategic goals.
  • Research Contribution: Contribute to research outputs, including publications, software, and technical reports.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders through workshops and co-design sessions.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior engineers.
  • Innovation: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends in cloud computing.

What You’ll Bring

We are looking for a candidate who possesses:

  • Education: A Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience is required (a PhD is desirable).
  • Cloud Expertise: A strong background in AWS, Azure, or GCP, with proven expertise in cloud-native solutions.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with microservices, APIs, DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code platforms.
  • Containerization: Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes (e.g., AKS).
  • Soft Skills: Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage projects and mentor team members.
  • Methodology: Experience working collaboratively in Agile and co-design environments.
