Are you an aspiring engineer looking to make a global impact during your university break? Indeed, Burns & McDonnell is searching for a motivated Civil Engineering Intern to join our Transmission & Distribution group for a Summer 2026 placement in Birmingham. In this role, you will work collaboratively within our Substation team to support critical power delivery projects. About the Transmission & Distribution Group

Our group takes full responsibility for the planning and design of vital electrical projects. For example, we focus on overhead and underground transmission, substation design, grid modernization, and renewable power integration. Your Daily Journey as an Engineering Assistant

In this internship, you will provide essential support to our business strategy. Specifically, your tasks will include:

  • Project Support: You will assist with technical documentation, data entry, scanning, and creating professional PowerPoint presentations.

  • Problem Solving: You will research solutions to project concerns, analyze data, and recommend effective fixes to complex problems.

  • Continuous Improvement: You will participate in department efforts by collecting and analyzing performance data to find better ways of working.

  • Collaboration: You will assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers and respond to general technical questions.

  • Accountability: You will perform all duties while complying with our high policies and safety standards.

What You’ll Bring to Our Birmingham Office

We are looking for students who are eager to grow and develop within the engineering field. Ideally, you possess the following qualifications:

  • Academic Pursuit: You are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (or a related field) from an accredited program.

  • Scholastic Standing: You are in good standing with your university, and we strongly prefer a minimum GPA of 3.0.

  • Technical Aptitude: You have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Soft Skills: You possess excellent verbal and written communication skills along with strong analytical abilities.

  • Leadership: You have demonstrated leadership skills and are actively involved in campus or community organizations.

  • Experience: Prior internship or related consulting experience is a plus, though not strictly required.
